Disco Dancer Book Review

If a person deliberately wishes to write something funny with a sarcastic, forced-in humour about Hindi films from the past, then he can easily make fun of any randomly picked movie, particularly from the decade of 1980s, since that was the time when our industry was going through a major transforming phase wherein very few creators had the right vision to follow. But before picking any supposedly average or poor film made in that era to write a spoof on, a writer/journalist has to keep in mind the time period it was made in and more importantly the reason why it still went on to become a major hit in the year of its release such as DISCO DANCER (1982).
However, US-based author Anuvab Pal simply ignores this major fact and goes on to write his small book, projecting DISCO DANCER as a comedy film following his own set thinking patterns and questionable sarcasm. In order to prove his chosen point he translates all the (Hindi) dialogues of the film into English (forming the major part of the book) and tries to crack a sick joke in this weird manner wasting more than 100 pages. Further he quite over-confidently even goes out to interview the film’s director B. Subhash, music director Bappi Lahiri and the lead actor Mithun Chakraborty too, without telling them the truth that he is actually interviewing them in order to write a book which daringly calls their ‘hit DISCO DANCER’ a comedy. And in my opinion this was really something pathetic and disrespectful, especially for Bappi Lahiri who was mostly responsible for the huge success of the film having a splendidly composed soundtrack by the veteran. Moreover making a spirited move to establish his own vision about the subject, Anuvab continues making fun of a few known facts and again gives us a sarcastic title to his last chapter devoted to the famous trivia about the film calling it, “Random Unconfirmed Facts” in the end.
In short, the book is nothing to be read about if you really are a true Hindi movies freak, since here the writer himself seems to be pretty confused about the concept, as at one end he says, “Deep down I am a disco dancer” and on the other, he goes on to ridicule the film to the extent of insulting its reputed team members too interviewing them without revealing his real intentions.
Hence honestly as I see it, the attempt cannot even be included in the category of ‘Just for Good Fun’ because in this way any English Classic can also be easily converted into a long joke by translating its entire dialogues into Hindi resulting in many hilarious lines generating a good laughter. Moreover this also clearly shows that the writer in question, probably hasn’t lived those passionate years of film viewing in 70s-80s personally and has just heard or read about the euphoria around Hindi Films in those crazy decades of advance bookings and black marketing.
Anyway, for all the interested young readers here, though on quality terms one can easily find many flaws and illogical situations in DISCO DANCER, watching it from the viewpoint of this new millennium. But the film indeed came with a fresh, welcome phenomenon in the year 1982 and unarguably remains a cult entertainer of Indian Cinema till date mainly due to its hit music, all the trademark dance movements by Mithun Chakraborty performed quite innovatively and a unique kind of climax (never tried before or after) having 3 full length songs played back to back in its finale show. Plus as a known fact which might surprise many, it was also declared one of top grosser of 1982 scoring much more than many famous hits such as NAMAK HALAAL, KHUD-DAAR, NIKAAH, PREM ROG, ARTH, SANAM TERI KASAM, DESH PREMEE, SATTE PE SATTA and Richard Attenborough’s GANDHI.
Leave Disco Dancer Alone - Book ReviewBut more astonishingly DISCO DANCER remains one of the highest earners and among the five most famous films ever in Russia (Soviet Union) too, standing tall along gems such as AWARA, SEETA AUR GEETA & BOBBY. Besides there are several amazing anecdotes related with Mithun Chakraborty’s unbelievable craze in Soviet citizens as ‘The Dancer’ which even forced their press to invent a title for all Mithun fans as ‘Mithunists’. Interestingly the film did receive few poor reviews in the Russian press too like in India. But such was the backlash to those reviews in the public letters that it resulted in quite a heated debate in the film-magazines at that time in Russia. And later in 2008 when writer Sudha Rajagoplan came up with her book on ‘Indian Cinema and Soviet Movie-Going After Stalin’, then she decided to name it as “LEAVE DISCO DANCER ALONE” giving a clear indication of the film’s undisputed cult status in that other part of the world.
Summing up, in one way this book by Anuvab Pal teaches us a valuable lesson that any creative expression like films needs to be studied and written upon in context of its actual time of creation or release only, otherwise every new generation will keep on making fun of the previous one as always………..which is not the way to study the past or in this case our own CINEMA.

The publicity posters of the movie said, “From the makers of BODYGUARD” and that was enough to shatter any expectations from this projected comedy loosely based on the recent real life incidents in Delhi. Still I was willing to see something interesting made as a comic satire on the burning issues of corruption and political scams. But beginning with 2 horrible songs in the first 15 minutes itself along with few cheap double meaning dialogues and loud acting, my only hope got vanished quickly and then I was only having some quick naps in between this terrible forced comedy, good for nothing.
Yet to give you a fair idea, O TERI is simply a deliberate & poorly written attempt which vaguely aims at being an enjoyable comedy as well as a thoughtful satire on the present system and its fresh scams. But the real truth is that a completely different, well read and visionary mind is required to make a satirical-comedy on the lines of cult classic JAANE BHI DO YAARON directed by Kundan Shah, which is simply missing in this confused, directionless and below average project from Umesh Bist.
Taking its major inspiration from Shah’s all time gem, O TERI is also about two good friends looking for a scandalous story for their TV program. Plus there is ‘a dead body comedy’ and ‘a falling bridge’ too straight away reminding you of JBDY. To give it a more up-to-date feel, the writers use the above mentioned plots in context of the latest ‘Games Scams’ in Delhi involving many known leaders and further try to give a social message too in a completely uninteresting climax making no impact whatsoever on the viewer.
In short, despite having all the required ingredients of making a good entertaining comedy (also having a song on FB & Twitter), O TERI fails miserably due to a bad script, over the top acting and all avoidable social messages in which no viewer is interested at all. Its humour remains dull, the dialogues are overdramatic and most of the sequences are not able to generate any kind of excitement among the audience. So guessing the same, I lost all my interest in the movie from the beginning itself and actually felt sorry for Pulkit Samrat, whose career was really progressing well till this silly mistake. Moreover just like DISHKIYOON, here too I didn’t stop to see Salman Khan dancing in a special number played along the end credits.

A completely worn-out, seen before and over-used concept can become watchable only if it has something fresh to say in its execution breaking some previous norms. But the latest action thriller DISHKIYAOON directed by Sanamjit Singh Talwar (made on the same old backdrop of underworld dons), doesn’t even have one single scene to impress you in any way. Moreover the film actually looks like one of those old, stalled projects which has been finally presented as a complete film after re-editing all its available rushes somehow, as the producer’s last resort. And this conclusion can easily be drawn by looking at the film’s sloppy editing and its very first scene which right away introduces both Sunny Deol and Harman Baweja talking to each other in a quite lazy and uninspiring manner, simply ruining the excitement built by its interesting promos.
So honestly there is nothing to be written as a detailed review here. But yes, there still remain one unique manner in which the film can serve as something highly useful for all the professional institutes teaching film-making (with reference to only Hindi films).
Explaining it further, DISHKIYAOON certainly can be considered as one project which can perfectly be used to teach what is meant by ‘Wrong Casting’ or ‘Miscasting’ in a film to the enthusiastic students of cinema, undoubtedly. And the reason for this is that except Prashant Narayan & Aditya Pancholi playing their usual mannerisms, not even a single lead actor looks like the role he is playing and one can notice this big mistake in the film’s opening sequence itself quite clearly. For instance, Sunny Deol (in his only few minutes appearance) turns out to be a complete misfit speaking in a Hariyanvi tone, Harman Baweja pretty unconvincingly plays a tapori having the persona of a rich brat, Anand Tiwari (trying hard) reminds you of a comic character ready to crack a joke every time he comes on the screen and Sumit Nijhawan as the head gangster seems to be a last moment change after a refusal by any other deserving candidate.
In short, what can you expect from a movie which has all its four lead actors, misfit for their respective roles and the director is more interested in only style and less content, talking about nothing new. So I walked out of the theater even before it ended properly and no I didn’t stay for any sizzling act of Shilpa Shetty Kundra played along the end credits.

Though politics can easily be quoted as one of the most favorite subjects of general discussion in the public, still for a film adaptation it has always been a dicey one with only few exceptions in the past. So at one end, YOUNGISTAAN can surely be rated as a brave film, trying to en-cash the current political mood of the whole country with a positive message. But on the other, the way it has been presented before the audience with a specific purpose & perfect timing, it more seems to be the part of publicity campaign of one of the leading parties of the nation, rather than being a new Hindi Film in totality.
Directed by Syed Ahmad Afzal, it begins too casually with a party song straight away and then starts imitating the real life political scenario of India, focusing completely on the young character of Jacky Bhagnani as the next Prime Minister of the country and nothing else. The boy reaches the reputed post all of a sudden just because of a favourable stroke of destiny and one can easily raise many questions on the sequences depicting his unexpected entry in politics executed so casually. However following a very light, comic progression, the film does manage to hook you up initially due to its novel concept and few enjoyable scenes. But once the script completely goes into politics; everything starts happening too quickly and in quite a childish way too, forgetting that we are actually talking about A President, PM and other prominent figures running our country and not any high profile owners of a big corporate firm doing the routine business.
So in real terms, YOUNGISTAAN fails to make an impact as it gets confused between various genres and is not able to follow any particular one throughout. In the first few reels, it is a comedy, in the middle ones it turns into a half heartedly made political thriller and then in the last few it becomes a boring social drama with a message given in a prolonged climax. As a result it can simply be rated as a film with an important & heavy subject, made in an equally light, careless or immature way without having any clear path.
To name the plus points, its production design is eye-catching, background score is decent and the soundtrack has got a good song too as 'Suno Na Sangemarmar'. Moroever Jacky once again gives an impressive performance with all his calm charm and Neha Sharma does fine too looking beautiful on the screen. The rest of the cast including Boman Irani, Meeta Vashisht and Kayoze Irani get nothing much to do, except late Farooque Sheikh, who is an absolutely delight to watch and remains the only saving grace in the film right till the end.
In short, it’s the post interval section of the film which makes it quite boring to watch as we have already seen enough of that stuff on our TV sets since the last few months. Coming to its realistic references,  such are the straight similarities of the film with the contemporary Indian Politics and its ruling party that at times one starts thinking that perhaps this has been made by the party only in order to spread a positive wave about their candidates in the next election. For instance, it has a scene wherein Jackie is probably inaugurating a very high rise statue of a key figure (pointing towards Sardar Patel) and then we have a TV interview of him taken by a renowned journalist named Parnab too (reminding you of Arnab of Times Now Channel). Further the film releasing in a very crucial week just before the elections surely puts you in doubts about the real motive of its making and the actual producers.
Anyway whatever the truth behind its production might be, the basic point is that the film actually suffers a lot due to the completely confused vision of its director, following which he tries to put in almost everything to woo the audience ranging from a video game developer’s job, live in relationship, having a child before the marriage and a lead character named Dashrath wearing a purely Muslim attire (to please both the communities). Moreover YOUNGISTAAN can also be called an entirely filmy take or a questionable fantasy version of the current political situation of our country, wherein there is no strong opposition in the picture and also readymade solutions are available with the Prime Minister for every major problem as if he is still playing a video game knowing all its codes.
