In the recent years, one department in which Hindi films have really shown their professional mastery & ability to impress the viewers right away is their promotional department, with excellence achieved in making a film’s theatrical trailers and TV promos. Coming straight to the point, there have been so many instances in the last decade when the promo of a film was so good in its overall appeal and content, but the film was simply nowhere in comparison to the expectations raised from its trailers. In fact most of the times, the film had nothing more than what was already shown in the promos, resulting in a quite disappointing movie in the end, wasting both our money & time together.
Unfortunately, the latest adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” titled ISSAQ also falls in the same category mentioned above (God knows when they will stop making these similar films repeatedly, last one being ISHAQZADEY) which gives you nothing as promised in its well designed promos. The film is a pretty weak product, with an inconsistent story progression wherein you are not able to find any kind of emotional connect with its lead pair or other characters. It begins well with some well shot scenes but then an erratic kind of editing gives you a series of unimpressive sequences with no proper linking at all indicating a bad film ahead. Contradicting its own genre, this is a love story which completely fails to deliver any likable romance to the viewers and has a few childish and weird romantic scenes too missing that must have on-screen chemistry between the two lovers.
Actually as I felt, ISSAQ is a kind of over-confident film in which every sequence, song or action scene has been shot as if they are making a big path breaking film in Bollywood. Its several untimely inserted scenes, give you a strong feeling that they must have edited it, considering it a major epic in the making for sure (with such irregular cuts). The height of its uncanny creative imagination can be easily guessed from the fact that the film also has a fake Sadhu (Makrand Deshpande) who can lift himself from the ground in air and further when these Sadhus start smoking, there comes a text written on the screen saying, “Character Smoking Herbs not Tobacco”. A few boys sitting in the row behind mine literally had a good laugh reading that (along with myself) and I was really stunned to see the way we viewers were considered mere fools by this single line written on the screen (by both the makers and the censors).
Smartly promoted as a highly tense love drama full of guns & murders, ISSAQ has simply got nothing to offer before the interval and it continues moving ahead without any specific direction in its second half too. Such is the impact of its many unconvincing scenes that at a few times I really remembered a line from a comedy serial of 80s (Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi) in which Tiku Talsania used to say in anger……..”Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai?” And probably that should give you a clear idea about the film and its content without any doubts left.
The soundtrack of ISSAQ doesn’t add much to the romantic feel of the subject with only one soothing title song and background score tries it too hard (like all other departments) by using more than the required ethnic instruments to give a raw & earthy feel to the film. At times the music becomes a bit over too but the camerawork mostly manages to make its colourful scenes watchable. Still the local warmth and feel of all those Indian locations (Banaras) is strangely not there.
Regarding the performances, ISSAQ can rightly be called an impressive debut movie of Amyra who looks sweet and acts fine in her given role. The girl has got the confidence and spark too which might be visible more brightly in her next ventures. But Prateik is not upto the mark here and needs to make much more efforts to put in some good performances in his coming films. He is not able to win your heart facing all the hardships in the film and thus fails to make an instant connect with the audience playing a spirited lover boy. In the supporting cast, Rajeshwari Sachdeva, Neena Gupta and Ravi Kishan are fine but Prashant Narayan is surprisingly wasted in a very questionable manner. Makrand Deshpande looks silly due to his badly written character but Vineet Kumar Singh & Sudhir Pandey perform well in their few scenes.
In all ISSAQ can easily be called an unexpectedly mediocre product which had a well designed promo, much better than the complete movie itself and there was only one question in my mind as the film got over that, What kind of attempt was this? So consider it strictly avoidable even if you loved its theatrical trailer and title track a lot.

Projected as a laugh riot in its promotional campaign, BAJATEY RAHO is actually a revenge con drama trying too hard to entertain the viewer with its not so hilarious sequences. The film has a star-cast promising you an enjoyable ride but the not so happening script never lets them perform to the best of their ability except in the final half an hour. As a result, till the story progression gains it desired momentum, it becomes too late for this comparatively short duration film of only 107 minutes and the viewer largely remains unsatisfied while moving out.
Taking a wild guess on the basic idea behind this film, it seems that the makers wished to make something on the lines of KHOSLA KA GHOSLA along with the references of the big surprise hit VICKY DONOR. So working on this exciting idea, they first got a script written, mostly inspired from the plot of KKG wherein a huge sum needs to be stolen back from a cunning businessman and roped in Vinay Pathak, Ranveer Shorey & Rajender Sethi, the three men playing key roles in the same movie. Now further taking a clue from the recent success of VD, they bring in Dolly Alhuwalia & even Kamlesh Gill to woo the audience. And then to make it a more commercial viable product, they get Tusshar Kapoor (as the hero), Ravi Kishan (as the villain) & Vishakha Singh to play the forced in romantic lead which was not required at all. So in my opinion, this must have been the thought process behind the making of this poor clone of KHOSLA KA GHOSLA as it seems.
Following the above mentioned vision, the director tries to retain the same Punjabi feel, placing his characters in the good old Delhi, one of the most favourite city of Bollywood directors in the last few years. Moreover the dialogues are all written with a typical Punjabi touch, which completely fails to generate even half of what we all enjoyed a lot in both KKG and VD. Beginning with an unimpressive sting operation scene in a school, its first hour is a big drag with nothing great happening on the screen despite the presence of some exceptionally talented actors. The director is unable to extract a good comedy from his performers due to an unexciting writing and the film truly disappoints before the interval.
Thankfully the scenario takes a major turn post intermission as the progression gains momentum and it all gets on the right path with everyone joining in for a big fat marriage. The smiles are back after a fine Jagran sequence (reminding you the one seen in FUKREY) having a great parody song, “Tainu Main Love Karda” (Mata Di Bhent) written brilliantly, based on the famous DESI BOYZ party track. Later there is another catchy number “Main Nagin Dance Nachna” which should do well in the discos and parties all over north India. Coming to its conclusion fast, the film ends on a hurried note and the final 30-40 minutes, luckily save this weak attempt from the director Shashant Shah, post his appreciable DASVIDANIYA (2008) and CHALO DILLI (2011).

BAJATEY RAHO fails to make an instant connect with the viewer mainly due to its slow and non-hilarious script which tries desperately to bring in that desired humor in vain. Its major attraction i.e. the star-cast mostly remains underutilized with actors like Vinay, Ranveer and Tusshar simply doing nothing substantial on the screen unexpectedly. Ravi Kishan and Vishakha act fine but the romantic angle between Vishakha and Tushhar was entirely out of sync. In the remaining cast Rajender Sethi (the TV Star’s father), Rajinder Nanu (Raman), Vikas Mohla (pawan), Anya Singh (Gudiya), Nikhil Pandey (as the TV Star) and Husaan Saad (the Kid) provide their much needed support in the events, particularly in the last hour. But it was quite surprising to see Kamlesh Gill (the famous Dadi of VD) being wasted only in 2-3 scenes.
Cinematography gives the film its much required look or feel and Background Score tries to create the impact of a hit comedy with much effort. But when in a Hindi film, actors try to speak Punjabi in a faulty way then it really ruins the build-up and questions the direction as well as the writing in a big way. Yet BAJATEY RAHO can be seen once for its two good songs, a few entertaining scenes of Dolly Ahluwalia and a truthful performance of Brijendra Kala playing the ignored personal secretary superbly. It has a better second half which largely saves the film, turning it into an average entertainer in the end, quite safely. Still films like BAJATEY RAHO (which could have been much more with such a cast ensemble) mostly enjoy a better run in the home video market than in the theaters.

Ship Of Theseus - Bobby Talks Cinema.com

The title of the review itself should be inviting enough for every true lover of real cinema and it was indeed a highly satisfactory Friday this week, watching such an outstanding and meditative expression coming from our own Indian film-makers after many years (read decades).
But here frankly, I am not going into the practice of using all those exciting verbal phrases to praise this astonishing piece of work as you might have already read in many other reviews & write-ups. In fact the biggest respect, the highest acclaim and the loudest applause to this rare achievement in Indian Cinema would be, that you at once search for the theaters showing this in your town, find the time to catch it postponing all your other important works, travel whatever distance you may have to reach the venue and just go to see SHIP OF THESEUS right away to participate in this new age celebration being made on the silver screen. And in case the film is not being shown in your town, then simply curse the way movies are usually seen and exhibited here in our country, just to make some quick bucks without caring about the essence of the term ‘Cinema’ & its soul at all.
If I am asked then the only job of a reviewer here is to influence his readers to watch such significant chapter of Indian Cinema at the earliest without any further delay and that too by not revealing any major details about its unpredictable content, maintaining its precious sanctity intact. So from that angel I would only like to say that this is something, which can easily be termed as a beginning of a new shining phase in our country, which might bring in a fresh mature outlook in the way we watch movies and may cause a new digital revolution among the young creative minds of the nation. 
As an indicative review, SHIP OF THESEUS is certainly a rare cinematic triumph from our Indian Film Industry which brilliantly amalgamates various human emotions on the screen quite mesmerizingly in its three different storylines of a photographer, a monk and a share broker. Its insightful title refers to the historical Theseus’s Paradox which raises a doubt or a question that if the different components of an object are replaced with exactly similar ones, then does the object basically remains the same or not. The paradox has been used quite beautifully in the film (and its skillfully designed poster too) which strongly stays with the viewer for next few hours and even days once he gets it. It has some intense & remarkable verbal interactions putting you into a deep thinking mode within its first 15 minutes itself, absolutely stunning visuals to take you onto another world altogether and a minimal yet graceful (natural) background score which simply lifts all its well conceived sequences on to the next level. Further, truly genuine performances by some extremely gifted actors never let you feel that you are watching a fictional film at all and its concluding moments merely turn you into a statue with the complete film jamming into your mind in a fast reversing mode like a loop.
Also, SOT has an extremely significant message for the viewers in its final scenes which needs to be discovered by every individual on his own and should not be ideally revealed in any review as such. Because as I feel, one has to interpret and contemplate on that presented thought individually, without any interfering explanation of a third person and that is how it can hit the viewer hard, reaching the deepest core of his or her sleeping conscience demanding an immediate action.
To tell you the truth, SHIP OF THESEUS is precisely one of those precious films for which I use the phrase, “Movies To See Before You Die” at this site. The reference of this five letter word DEATH, is essentially required to bring in that urgent need, that immediate interest and a passionate pull towards such ‘must watch’ films, which otherwise might get skipped or may not reach its deserving audience at all.
These are the films which can teach you life, the way to live it, the way to cherish its each and every (remaining) blessed moment to the fullest………… exactly like a beautiful piece of poetry, song, book or painting inspires a thinking soul. These are the films which have got the power to transform, hidden in their admirable meaningful subjects and the ones which might be able to teach you a valuable lesson of life, equivalent to the deep spiritual messages given in all the religious scriptures.
And after watching SHIP OF THESEUS this Friday, I had no other phrase in mind at all to express its two enlightening hours full of a splendid vision than the one mentioned above.
Actually the film is just like listening to an enlightening discourse which makes you realize that, Yes you are still alive with all your basic senses working fine in a healthy body, which is nothing less than a miracle blessed by the Almighty. Moreover, its concluding part leaves you in an intense thoughtful mode, reminding the fact that there is still lot to be done while we continue breathing and certain decisions need to be taken on an urgent basis which would help us all to be alive differently, even after our own ‘Death’ (representing the Theseus Paradox)
So as my personal vision, SHIP OF THESEUS is a kind of ‘spiritual document’ which should be shown to all youngsters studying in various schools and colleges across the country in order to make them aware of all the gifted treasures they have which can be shared even after the ultimate end of a body called Death.
Praising the sincere effort, I would like to add that since the last few years, whenever somebody asked me to name a few classic films, to be watched as a must for understanding the medium of cinema and its immense power. I always had suggestions of many English and foreign language films instantly coming to my mind and then a few Indian movies too made in the last century (mostly from the New wave cinema seen in the 70s & 80s). But very rarely did I have any name coming to my mind from the recent decades, of an Indian film which could be called as a Spiritual Lesson captured on the screen from any of the new generation directors.
However the case is not the same since last Friday post SHIP OF THESEUS, as now I have got a film, a masterpiece from our own Indian Cinema to proudly recommend as a must watch, which deserves to be seen before one dies in the most literal sense. So firstly I would like to congratulate its director Anand Gandhi for giving we Indian audience a film to be proud of (after a long time), a film which can easily be kept in the highest bracket among many other world cinema classics without any hesitation. Secondly, we surely need to thank the presenters of the film, Kiran Rao & UTV for making it possible to reach the bigger screen, since most of the times meaningful attempts like these just remain in the closed corridors of the festivals and never reach the general viewers.
Lastly but most importantly, I would like to address my fellow viewers with a humble urge that for a while just forget your favourite big stars providing the usual weekend entertainment repeatedly and please don’t let the medium of this film (which is mostly English), discourage you from watching it in the theaters, buying a costly ticket. SHIP OF THESEUS rises much above your expectations, incorporating a surprising element of humor too in its pensive content and keeps the viewer glued to the screen with an unpredictable progression throughout. So for once, simply pass any of your preliminary mind hurdles and watch this one of the most important Indian Film of the new millennium as a must, since it does have something worth to share……………..which might enhance the way you would be living your remaining years of life in the indefinite future.
Rating : It’s a Movie To See Before You Die in the most literal sense. So don’t even think of skipping it if you do consider yourself, a passionate Indian movie buff.

(Might be considered as 4.5/5 with the only minus point of having a Language Barrier for Indian audience)

(But giving it a second thought, its also quite sad to admit that one of most important and well made masterpiece of the recent times from India......is actually in English)

D-Day

Hindi Cinema has not seen many well made and major box office successes in the particular genre of spy-thrillers featuring special agents sent on a deadly mission. Yes, there have been hits in the past as ANKHEN (1968) and AGENT VINOD (1977). But in the recent decades this has not been one of the favourite genres of Bollywood directors with an occasional 16 DECEMBER (2002), THE HERO (2003) or VISHWAROOPAM (2013) being made after long gaps (and NO, I don’t consider EK THA TIGER (2012) as any spy thriller at all). Hence firstly, D-DAY & its makers deserve a special appreciation just for the very reason of making a brave choice of this genre alone and then further it needs to be applauded for an exceptional execution which certainly reminds you of many well made foreign movies in the ‘World cinema’.
If one considers the film’s ‘out of the box’ presentation, its sharply edited sequences and many selfless performances by the cast, then only a few directors come to your mind led by RGV kind of film-making group in the industry. But I never expected Nikhil Advani the man behind, KAL HO NA HO (2003), SALAAM-E-ISHQ (2007), CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA (2009) and PATIALA HOUSE (2011) coming up with such an intense, hard-hitting film made on an explosive, relevant as well as controversial plot, ever.
As speculated, D-DAY is not just another Gangster movie from Bollywood as it may sound looking at its promos. Instead it’s actually the first thoughtful film from our makers, which focuses on bringing back the most wanted man to the Indian Territory for justice and simply not interested in glorifying the crime mafia and The Don following the usual norms. Hence it’s a welcome change as far as the subject is concerned and further it has been handled too with an equal amount of intelligence and courage.
The film begins with a fabulous 10 minutes of a well conceived sequence wherein the Indian RAW agents are just about to meet The MAN, whom they wish to steal away back. And then its fast intercuts, well composed background score and the unusual camera movements simply give you an indication that this is not a routine stuff from the director this time, probably less appealing to the general public. Anyway, as the film progresses, the promise of its initial minutes is duly fulfilled right till the last frame in a competent style. At times the realistic indicative references of the wanted man, his son’s big marriage and a renowned cricketer, makes you feel both exciting and scary. Particularly I loved watching the scene in the Mosque, where HE is coming to say his prayers and Irrfan is watching him silently standing behind a pillar. The first half has many similar well directed sequences and it truly feels like watching a great spy thriller made in an international style, rarely seen in Indian Cinema.
Post intermission, the excellence continues but the pace drops for a while with some avoidable long sequences which at one end may please the critics, but on the other might turn out to be less engaging & uninteresting to others. Personally speaking, it was a real treat to witness the sequence related to Shruti’s murder and the murderer washing his hands with Arjun’ shirt, but the sub-plot did have its own problems discussed later. The final moments of the film keep you guessing and then it offers a surprising twist leading to a largely satisfying end of a gripping film. But if only, they had taken care of some visible glitches, D-DAY could have become a winning masterpiece of Hindi Cinema undoubtedly.
Pointing out its limitations, the basic storyline of the film is quite close to the concept of ZERO DARK THIRTY (2013) and Shatrujeet Nath’s novel titled THE KARACHI DECEPTION, which can entirely be called a fiction with an unimaginable Indian mission. A mission or national will, which can only be dreamt and not achieved in the present world scenario, quite frankly. And that is what stops the viewer to get involved in the film patriotically, since he already knows that’s this is never going to happen in the given conditions at all.

Secondly, the added sub-plot of Arjun-Shruti love affair is completely forced in to cater the commercial needs of the project, since a hugely dedicated ‘Army Officer’ would never ideally indulge in such suicidal activities during his important mission at all and that too with such intensity. So when you think about the whole film again, this seems to be absolutely out of sync and doesn’t gel in well with its overall theme. Lastly, where the first half brilliantly maintains the terror of the Most Wanted Man in some well directed sequences, the second half fails to take that terror on to the next level and the character becomes more of a caricature type in the concluding hour.
However, moving over the above mentioned drawbacks, technically it’s truly a well executed film made with some brave and honest intentions. Following an extremely quality narrative, not normally seen in our Hindi Cinema, D-DAY is sure going to impress the classes more than the masses. The art department never lets you feel that you are not in Pakistan (with some great sets and locations) and that’s exactly what an art director is trying to do in his given job. The camerawork reminds you of many well made international projects and never gives you the feel of watching a typical Hindi film. The writing and dialogues contributes a lot, except in the last hour where in the writers slightly go over imaginative and too easy in the final border crossings.
The music section adds a new dimension to the film (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy) with a worth listening Qawwali “Mera Murshad Khele Holi” heard after a long time and a well composed, written & sung track, “Alvida”. The visuals in the song truly make you go numb and don’t let you move for a while becoming one of major merits of the film. In addition there is Rekha Bhardawaj superbly singing “Ek Ghadi” to complete an appreciable soundtrack by the trio.
In the performances, once again we have Rishi Kapoor continuing his enjoyable journey of re-discovering the hidden actor, forgetting his own famous lover boy image of the past. It really takes guts to think of him as The Don, but the veteran does look, act and behave like him on the screen, quite astonishingly. Yet, I do wish the director should have emphasized on the terror factor more in the second half.
As the RAW agents, Irrfan Khan repeatedly gives a stunning performance caught in the dilemma, especially towards the end. Arjun Rampal surprises with an extremely intense performance, particularly excelling himself in the song ‘Alvida’. Huma Qureshi confidently manages to find her decent space standing in between the towering performers and Shruti Haasan shows another glimpse of her unexplored talent, portraying a complex character of a prostitute full of pain.
In the supporting cast, Sriswara is a great revelation as Irrfan’s wife. Both Aakash Dahiya and Chandan Roy Sanyal leave a lasting impact along with Nasser as the RAW Chief. K.K. Raina, Nissar Khan and Sandeep Kulkarni act well in their supporting acts but Rajpal Yadav was a wrong choice to begin the film as a singer singing “Dama Dum Mast Qalander”.
Altogether, D-DAY does have its own share of hiccups and some usual commercial insertions to make it more viable. Still, it remains the most innovative, well structured and well shot spy movie from Bollywood (with a worth listening off-beat soundtrack too), surely deserving appreciation from the lovers of this particular genre. But the film also has a strange contradiction as I felt, since the most impressive & emotionally moving sub-plot in its script (of Arjun-Shruti romance), also happens to be the only unwanted insertion in the movie as per its genre. And without it, D-Day would have been a totally focused and taut, high energy, fast paced, thriller unarguably.
Hence with that strange paradox, I would like to recommend watching D-DAY as a must since this is indeed the next step in making GANGSTER movies thoughtfully taken by Bollywood.
