Ab Dilli Door Nahin (1957) - (Movies To See Before You Die - Drama)

Ab Dilli Door Nahin - Bobby Talks Cinema.comConceiving an experimental kind of movie in the late fifties proves the wide vision of RK Banner and Raj Kapoor trying to compete with the note-worthy films being made in the rest of the world in that particular period of time. And that’s the reason I strongly support the thought that though “Ab Dilli Door Nahin” is actually more remembered for its hugely famous song “Chu Chu Karti Aayi Chidiya” (Hasrat Jaipuri / Dattaram / Mohd.Rafi), the project should not be considered as ‘a children film’ alone due to its highly relevant theme raising several significant issues of our lives and the society as a whole.

It narrates the story of an innocent child Ratan’s journey from his village to Delhi in order to meet Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, then Prime Minister of India who was also famous in the kids as Chacha Nehru. He wishes to tell Pandit Ji about his father’s innocence who has been falsely charged with a murder and believes that the PM is the only person who can help his family come out of this serious problem and no one else. Ratan has an important letter written as a proof by an eye witness that he wishes to hand over to Pandit Ji personally and how he painstakingly completes his journey meeting the PM (depicted in a well directed indicative sequence without showing Pt. Nehru), becomes the main crux of the script capturing human emotions and expectations quite beautifully.

As an important film of those times, “Ab Dilli Door Nahin” wonderfully brings forward the innocent feelings and the mind state of a young energetic child living in just a decade old ‘independent India’ and is even capable of making you cry watching the hardships he has to go through. Indeed a must watch for not only the students of cinema but for the present thinking generation too, who simply love movies as an effective medium of expression and a believable strong representative of the past decades.
