The latest Akshay Kumar-starrer‘Gabbar Is Back’(a remake of Tamil hit ‘Ramanaa’ released in 2002) has reportedly opened to mixed responses as far as reviews are concerned. But the film has one particular sequence being praised unanimously, related to the corruption by doctors and staff working under pressure in private hospitals.
The sequence focuses on Akshay deceiving the entire team at a reputed hospital by bringing in a corpse for emergency treatment. The supposedly alive patient gets admitted by the staff members despite knowing that it’s a dead bodyand then they keep on demanding advance deposits, medicines and expert consultancy charges for the life-saving treatment provided.
Making an instant connection with the common man, the thoughtful sequence turns out to be a big winner in the theaters receiving a huge applause, but not many would recall that an exactly similar scene was also there in a 2008 Hindi film titled ‘God Tussi Great Ho’ featuring Salman Khanand Priyanka Chopra in the lead roles.
Projected as a fantasy-comedy also having Amitabh Bachchan in a cameo role as God, the comedy had this particular sequence coming in its opening ten minutes only with Priyanka calling the shots of a sting operation planned for her TV Channel. The sequence progresses in the same manner as seen in ‘Gabbar Is Back’and then the doctors are caught red-handed while issuing a fresh death certificate as the solid evidence.
However, where ‘Gabbar Is Back’ officially followed the Tamil original ‘Ramanaa’, it cannot be confirmed whether ‘God Tussi Great Ho’ also had the same inspiration behind the sequence or if it was a rare co-incidence of two creative minds thinking alike.
