As I am writing this article I feel that we are still quite dependent on the English & World Cinema for our basic ideas of movie plots. Just take a look at this list of the inspired movies released in the year 2008. These so called Inspired Movies either took the main plot or straight away lifted the complete original movie. And Interestingly some of these are the major hits of the year.

Oh, My God – Main plot from “Bruce Almighty”(2003) & reappearing of GOD from “Oh, God!” (1977)
Dil Kabaddi - Loosely based on“Husband & Wives” (1992).
Sorry Bhai - Main plot inspired from “Dan In Real Life” (2007).
Yuvvraaj - Basic plot similar to “Rainman” (1988) & “Sautela Bhai” (1962).
Dasvidaniya - References of “The Bucket List” (2007), “My Life Without Me” (2003) &Love Actually (2003).
Dostana – References of "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry" (2007) & "The Devil Who Wears Prada" (2006).
Heroes - Basic Idea From “The Motorcycle Diaries” (2004).
Hari Puttar – Content taken from “Home Alone” (1990) & Title resembling “Harry Potter” (2001).
Ru Ba Ru – Follows“If Only” (2004).
Phoonk – On the same lines of RGV’s own “Raat” (1992) & “Bhoot” (2003) with a touch of Black Magic.
Hijack - Highly inspired from “Executive Decision” (1996)
Hello - Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel “One Night At The Call Center”
Rock On - Close to “The Happy Life” - A Korean Movie (2007) with similar publicity designs too.
God Tussi Great Ho – Gets its main storyline from “Bruce Almighty” (2003) & GOD calling from a Hotel Suite from “Oh, God!” (1977).
Bachna Ae Haseeno – Story plots similar to “High Fidelity” (2000) & “Definitely, Maybe” (2008) & "Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge" (1995).
Singh Is Kinng - Sequences and References from “Lady For A Day” (1933), “Pocketful of Miracles” (1961), “Ji Ji” or “Mr Canton and Lady Rose” (1989).
Ugly Aur Pagli – Loosely inspired from “Yeopgijeogin Geunyeo” or “My Sassy Girl” (2001).
Kismat Konnection - Follows the main plot of “Just My Luck” (2006).
Contract – References of “The Departed” (2006) & “The Assignment” (1997).
Good Luck – Based on “Just My Luck” (2006).
Love Story 2050 – References of “Back To The Future” (1985) & “The Time Machine” (2002).
Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic – References of “Marry Poppins” (1964), “The Sound Of Music” (1965) & “City Of Angels” (1998).
Via Darjeeling – Takes the Basic Idea from “Roshomon” (1950).
Khushboo – Loosely based on “Fools Rush In” (1997).
Aamir – Strikingly similar to “Cavite” (2005).
Woodstock Villa – Based on South Korean movie “Kaosu” or “Chaos” (1999).
Jannat – References of “Two For The Money” (2005) & Real Life Incidents from 2007 World Cup.
Bhoothnath – First Scene & Main Idea From “Casper” (1995).
Anamika – A version of Hitckcock’s “Rebecca” (1940).
Krazzy 4 – Highly Inspired By “The Dream Team” (1989)(Even the Posters have a resemblance too).
U Me Aur Hum – Takes its inspiration from “The Notebook” (2004), a Korean movie titled "A Moment To Remember" (2004) or "Nae Meorisokui Jiwoogae" and main tag line from “The Painted Veil” (2006). or "Nae Meorisokui Jiwoogae"
Shaurya - Loosely based on “A Few Good Men” (1992).
Race – Based on “Good Bye Lover” (1998).
Black & White – Has glimpses of “The Devil’s Own” (1997).
Mithya - Basic Plot Similar to “Don” (1978) & Italian movie “Johnny Stecchino” (1991).
And Our Own Remakes
Rab Ne Bana di Jodi – Same Theme was there in “Ponga Pandit” (1975)
Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi - Remake of “Tapasya” (1976)
Golmaal Returns - Takes the basic plot from “Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar” (1993)
Karzzzz - Remake of Subhash Ghai’s “Karz” (1980), which was itself an inspired but
well directed version of "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud" (1975).
But no doubt, there were some original movies too to enjoy from our dear “Bollywood” film-makers. And let’s hope there are more of the Originals coming in the new-year 2009.
