Sin City (2005) (Movies To See Before You Die - Thriller)

27 May, 2013 | Movies To See Before You Die / Thrillers

To begin with, this masterpiece may not be for all sections of viewers, since it certainly goes beyond the routine kind of film-making or execution along with being extremely dark, bloody and evil in its look and feel. But having said that, this also remains one of the most stylish & creatively conceived films till date, using the computer graphics & a selected colour palette on the screen in an amazingly outstanding manner, like never before. Moreover SIN CITY also happens to be the most stunning & artistic adaptation of the famous neo-noir comic series, which sets new high standards in the medium for such innovative ventures to be tried in the near future.

A very clever and novel interpretation of various Frank Miller stories happening in Basin City, it infuses a new, energetic life into its powerful, contrasting characters and does complete justice to their persona as required. Talking about four engrossing (interlinked) crime tales, SIN CITY features love, vengeance, injustice, morality, greed, blood, lust and brutality in an unusual manner which might be too heavy & unnerving for a few. But in cinematic terms this is nothing short of a trendsetting achievement in the world of cinema which needs to be applauded for sure.

To put it honestly, it’s a rare gem wherein the execution and treatment deserves far more attention & appreciation than its story plots. A fine piece of art brilliantly visualized by talented co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, SIN CITY has also got a segment guest directed by Quentin Tarantino. And I found his strong influence on the other violent sections of the film too, quite frankly. The high dosage of blood, bullets, girls and crime in its well shot scenes has a peculiar Tarantino feel and that’s another reason why it has to be seen at the earliest by all QT fans.

Furthermore, it’s a totally different experience watching SIN CITY with its unparalleled use of just few colour tones in the film, (namely red and yellow) which stand out wonderfully in its impressive colourless (black & white) frames and have a lasting impact. The thoughtful use of these limited colours, surely enhance the overall effect of its gruesome sequences and you feel like having watched something unique and exceptional for the first time. Apart from the gripping direction and a compelling script, the film is a collective result of a splendid cinematography, intelligently path break editing and some striking graphics. Though it also features some career best performances which knock you down completely within its initial half an hour only, yet it’s actually the overall visual appearance of this experimental project which proves to be the ultimate winner in the end undoubtedly.

In all SIN CITY has got a strong content displayed in a remarkable style which spells magic on the screen literally. It’s clever, its stylish and its unexpectedly unique which may also turn out to be as sick or weird too for a certain section of viewers looking for the routine stuff. So if you are not the one, searching for those glossy films and willing enough to see something extraordinary tried on the silver screen with all its blood & evil, then go for it at the earliest and feel the magic of SIN CITY right away.

I think there should a \'parental guidance\' board for films like this and Reservoir Dogs. (even though you mentioned it is not for all sections of viewers)
Will we see a post on \'Pulp Fiction\' or you don\'t agree with its \'legendary\' status?

Hi Chirs,
"PULP FICTION" is right there in the section of "Movies To See Before You Die" and you can read about it in the link below.

But the write-up is too short and an indicative one only since I wrote this in 2007 in the first few months of the site.
So you will not find much in it as compared to the recent ones.
However I soon wish to re-write it in the coming months as I get time since it rightly deserves a lot more.
Cheers!
