The Insider

If you consider cinema as a powerful, impressive medium representing both the brighter and darker side of our own social world then THE INSIDER becomes a much watch film for sure. As it forces you to think, realize and admit the reality of a false, materialistic world we are living in led by the ‘Corporates’ behind the curtain. A world which is more concerned about its personal growth, accumulated wealth and the blind profits earned, without caring about the human life sacrificed in the process.
In THE INSIDER the target corporate world is of the TOBACCO Industry which knowingly sells its harmful, addictive and life damaging product in the open, along with a clear mention on its packets saying ‘Smoking Kills’. The film is a shocking drama based on the true incident of a TV program episode (reportedly aired in 1995-96) in which an insider from the Tobacco Industry revealed some dark secrets about the business, acting as the whistleblower. The famous program was called ’60 Minutes’ and the episode was aired in an edited version after objections raised from the top authorities. The script of the film was however adapted from an article titled ‘The Man Who Knew Too Much’ published in an issue of Vanity Fair magazine.
THE INSIDER was nominated in seven major categories of Academy Awards in the year 2000 and Russell Crowe was widely considered as one of the deserving candidates of the Best Actor award by many. Directed by Michael Mann with a highly realistic approach, the film progresses at a slow yet engaging pace and remains a 155 minutes long take on a very questionable kind of business world we are living in, run by the few big money makers sitting at the top. And actually these hidden hands or minds not only own the industries but also hugely influence all kinds of media, which is in fact used to convey whatever is best for their own interests to the public.
So the film daringly reveals the truth behind the unlimited power of the corporate world and how it can pressurize everyone around to act for their personal benefits only, quite shamelessly. Shot with a splendid vision and a well composed musical score it has three great, worth watching performances by Russell Crowe, Al Pacino and Christopher Plummer. Crowe leads the film from the front with one of his career best acts and both Pacino & Plummer provide him a perfect support making THE INSIDER an important documentation of a shocking real life drama revealing a bitter truth. In fact that is another big reason, why it deserves to be seen by everyone who loves matured real life inspired movies, capable of showing us the ugly mirror right at our faces.
To put it straight, the true incidents depicted in the film actually convey the blunt fact that the common man is just nothing for the people in the power or on the top. And when a person manages to find the courage to say what needs to be said for the betterment of the whole society, his words can be timely twisted and the whole issue can easily be manipulated without any problem.
A deep introspective movie, showcasing many ‘eye-opener’ true facts about the real world around, THE INSIDER is a must watch indeed and highly recommended to all lovers of meaningful cinema made with a purpose.
