Undoubtedly one of the best thrillers made till date which brings you on to the edge of your seat and forces you to take notice of each and every movement made on the screen. Based on the novel with the same title by American writer Thomas Harris published in 1988, the film takes you into the minds of two extremely dangerous criminals wherein one helps an FBI agent to catch hold of the other, (who is a dangerous serial killer) by studying and interpreting his every move made.
Both Jodie Foster as the FBI agent and Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lector give one of their career best performances in the movie. In fact the character of Dr. Hannibal turns out to be so strong and impactful that it might disturb you even after days of watching this intense thriller. The brilliance of the movie was rightly rewarded when it won all the five major OSCARS that year including Best Movie, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay. A film which has to be there in the Best Thriller Movies List made by any crtique all around the globe.
If you haven’t seen it yet then do make sure that you watch it as your next. Even if you are not a fan of thriller or crime genre, still watch it especially for its unusual theme, flawless direction and the priceless expressions given by both Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins through their eyes only. And after watching it just see if you can figure out what its title actually means in the context of its story plot.
Interestingly the film was copied by Bollywood in their own indianised style with the title "Sangharsh” (1999), directed by Tanuja Chandra with the backing of Mahesh Bhatt as her writer. Now though there was no acknowledgement of any sort in the film about it original source. But still it was unexpectedly a worth watching inspired movie with Akshay Kumar playing Anthony Hopkins, Preity Zinta playing Jodie Foster and Ashutosh Rana playing the deadly serial child killer redefining terror in the Hindi Films in his own novel style. So if you wish then you can also try its Bollywood version too along with this Original masterpiece.
