Awara - Movies To See Before You DiePresenting himself as the tramp, early in the career post AAG & BARSAAT, the showman Raj Kapoor came up with these two thought provoking films maintaining a very fine balance between entertaining and meaningful cinema skillfully. And such was the success achieved by these two classics that they are now included in the most famous movies list not only in India but in the regions of (then) Soviet Union or Russia too, experiencing a phenomenal response surprising one and all.
In AWARA, Raj Kapoor begins straight from a tense courtroom sequence rejecting any usual trend followed in those times and then goes into a long flashback explaining the basic premises of the storyline from the early childhood. He then makes an entry as the clever tramp after 45 minutes into the film and raises a very valid question that, what makes a man, his parental genes (of a judge played by Prithiviraj Kapoor) or his upbringing (by a dacoit turned local gangster played by K.N. Singh) in an introspective manner. Presenting the intense subject (having the reference of RAMAYANA in its flashback) with a sensitive layer of romance woven into the proceeding cleverly, the film ends on a very high note and forces you to think about the big question asked, boldly.
Shree-420-Movies To Before You DieIn SHREE 420, he again breaks the formal mode and graces the screen in the very first scene itself playing the innocent tramp. Talking about the hardships faced by every poor person living pathetically in the big cities, the tramp instantly makes a loving connection with the viewer becoming a part of him, fighting with the cruel realities. Again amalgamating the two important elements of entertainment and enlightenment in an appreciable blend, Raj Kapoor effortlessly addresses numerous problems of the society ranging from class divide, poverty, homeless beings, unemployment, black-marketing, gambling and exploitation by the rich along with the essential love theme through a brilliant narration. And that’s the reason the film is still remembered for its voice raised against the system through a revolutionary climax.
Apart from being two brave films of that era (in the first decade of an independent India) focusing on the country’s new social structure being formed, the classics also had trend setting soundtracks with melodious songs composed by Shankar Jaikishan, lyrics by Shailendra & Hasrat Jaipuri, having the soulful voices of Shamshad Begum, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd. Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Mukesh and Manna Dey.
Russian Poster of Shree-420Considered as the two most significant films contributing hugely in the growth of Indian Cinema in the early 1950s, both AWARA and SHREE 420 also remain the first two all-time grossers in Russian region till date and were also responsible for spreading awareness about Indian films in the rest of the world too in those initial years post-independence.
A must watch for every student and keen lover of Indian Cinema, the films would also introduce you to the futuristic vision, Raj Kapoor had even in the beginning of his career, proudly proving his ancestral genes and a deep cinematic thought process through his creative expressions. Certainly an immensely gifted personality, who deserved to be called “The Showman” in all respects!
Cheers!
