In SHREE 420, he again breaks the formal mode and graces the screen in the very first scene itself playing the innocent tramp. Talking about the hardships faced by every poor person living pathetically in the big cities, the tramp instantly makes a loving connection with the viewer becoming a part of him, fighting with the cruel realities. Again amalgamating the two important elements of entertainment and enlightenment in an appreciable blend, Raj Kapoor effortlessly addresses numerous problems of the society ranging from class divide, poverty, homeless beings, unemployment, black-marketing, gambling and exploitation by the rich along with the essential love theme through a brilliant narration.
