The gracefully versatile NUTAN and her divine relation with the fragrance of Chandan (Sandalwood). (Did You Know - 66) |
Nutan, an extremely talented actress from our golden era of Hindi films was the first recipient of a record breaking 5 Filmfare awards for Best Actress and one for an outstanding performance later in the 80s.
The lady proved her exceptional talent through an amazing versatility and gracious simplicity displaying a wide range, difficult to find in her contemporaries to say it honestly. And her distinctive landmark performances in films such as Seema (1955), Anari (1959), Sujata (1960), Bandini (1963), Tere Ghar Ke Saamne (1963), Khandan (1965), Milan (1967), Saraswatichandra (1968) Saudagar (1973), Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978), Meri Jung (1985), Karma (1986) and Naam (1986) give you enough reasons to believe the remarkable talent, synonym to the phrase, ‘beauty with grace & elegance’. Further referring to her lovable screen presence, Lata Mangeshkar had once said that she was the only heroine who actually looked like singing on the screen enacting the words.
Interestingly not many know that apart from being an incredible actress, Nutan was also a decent singer and had sung in few of her movies too like Hamari Beti (1950), Chhabili (1960) and Mayuri (1985). In the later years of life she also wrote and sang devotional songs (Bhajans) and then began her spiritual journey along with pursuing other creative passions besides acting. Talking about her mystical connect, it is said that while she was just few years old, an astrologer commented that her soul had already attained Nirvana (Mukti), but was here in a rebirth just to fulfill a certain desire left, in a forceful manner. Sadly living a short life, Nutan became the unfortunate victim of cancer resulting in poor health and left this world just at the age of 54 in 1991.
Now the reason, for remembering one of my favourite actresses after a long time, happens to be one recent interview of her younger sister, actress Tanuja in FILMFARE magazine. And in that interview she eventually strengthened my personal perception of Nutan’s invisible aura, which did have a rare divine quality and a spiritual touch too, as I strongly felt. In fact whenever I used to watch any of her films be it a social drama, emotional love saga, comedy or the thoughtful ones from the memorable black and white era, I always felt like witnessing a highly graceful, beautiful woman with a blissfully divine soul, to put it frankly. Her spiritual quest in the final phase of life indicated towards the same and now reading a first person account of her younger sister given below, I truly feel that perhaps my heartfelt belief was not wrong and Nutan did have a spiritual connection to her being unknowingly.
