The infamous 'Talwar Murder Case' and its influence on Hindi crime novels and films. (An overview by Bobby Sing)

The double murder incident of 2008 in Noida is certainly one of the most famous and mysterious ‘Whodunit’ cases of the country widely featured and discussed within the media as well as the public in the last few years. At present the law has sentenced the proven culprits for life after a long court case but the mystery is still been speculated and challenged too about who actually did the act and for what reasons.
SBMM-Rahasya Crimes as such have always fascinated the creative minds to take their clues from and both crime-writers and film-makers have repeatedly used the opportunity in the past creating many known films (on true cases) like NO ONE KILLED JESSICA, NOT A LOVE STORY, SHOOTOUT AT LOKHANDWALA and more. Following the same path this particular case has also been the inspiration behind a recent crime novel and two Hindi feature films recreating the bloody murders in their own distinctive ways and interpretations.
In 2014, the famous Hindi crime-novelist Ved Prakash Sharma came up with a novel titled SABSE BADI MURDER MYSTERY and had his investigators Vijay-Vikas looking into an identical case reaching the real murderer trying to fool them all with a detailed trap having many major questionable loopholes. In the same year director Manish Gupta was also ready with this film RAHASYA revolving around the similar case but he could manage to get a decent release only in early 2015 due to various troubles faced in its making and few other issues. The film had a fine recreation of the event (much better than the novel) giving it a different unexpected turn featuring veteran actors such as Kay Kay Menon, Tisca Chopra, Mita Vashisht, Ashish Vidyarthi and Ashwini Kalsekar playing the key roles.
Next coming soon is director Meghna Gulzar with her not so fresh project based on the same case that probably has been approved by the victim family officially and has a script written by Vishal Bhardwaj putting the project in a completely different league altogether. The film presently titled either TALWAR or NYODA reportedly features Konkona Sen Sharma, Sohum Shah, Tabu and Irrfan Khan in the major roles. And post watching the well made RAHASYA, its certainly going to be interesting enough to see how Meghna showcases the case along with Vishal Bhardwaj with a possibly new angle and few unpredictable surprises as required.
However an amazing observation in the two already released projects on the case remains that both Ved Prakash Sharma in his novel and Manish Gupta in his film, more or less reveal the same characters committing the crime in the end (with different motives). Plus both the interpretations have an investigating police inspector too playing a crucial role in the proceedings with a negative approach quite surprisingly.
Now whether the same conclusion will be there in Meghna’s upcoming film along with the inspector being there or not is what keeps me interested and guessing till the project gets released possibly within the current year.
Cheers!
