There are not many comedies made with a fine blend of crime, thrill, mystery and laughter, all put together. This particular genre mixing all these distinctive elements entertainingly in a script is quite difficult to attempt. But there is one hugely famous series, having achieved this complex task superbly and that too with a good ratio of commercially successfully ventures as its consecutive sequels.
It’s the PINK PANTHER series with probably a more famous and frequently used signature theme music in many other regional films made all over the world than the Bond theme tune. In fact there are two things essentially associated with the PINK PANTHER series as a must. One remains its immensely catchy signature music and the other is the Man himself, PETER SELLERS as the funny French Police Detective, Inspector Clouseau. Such was the impact of Peter Sellers as the clumsy Inspector in the series that the effort of casting someone else in the key role didn’t get any kind of appreciation either from the viewers or from the performers in its initial decade of success. (1963-1978).
Apart from the films mentioned here the producers tried making “Inspector Clouseau” in 1968 with Alan Arkin in the lead, but it didn’t work out. Later after Peter Sellers sad demise in 1980 just at the age of 54, Blake Edwards made “Curse of the Pink Panther” in 1983 and “Son of the Pink Panther” in 1993 as his weak attempts to revive the series which also couldn’t bring back the magic on the screen. Here another interesting fact is that “Trail of The Pink Panther” made in 1982 (mentioned in the list), was also made by the producers as a Tribute to Peter Sellers, with all his unseen footage taken from his previous Pink Panther films only (which later also resulted in some legal disputes).
However, moving over the past, the series was brought back in 2006 with Steve Martin featuring as “Inspector Clouseau”, who didn’t disappoint the fans and was able to make a fine impact on the viewers, adding his own new histrionics to the character. Due to his fabulous portrayal as the comical French Detective, he again bounced back in its sequel in the year 2009, which also had our own Aishwarya Rai in a short but important role.
As per its storyline, the whole series revolves around the repeated robberies of a priceless diamond called “The Pink Panther” and the funny Inspector Clouseau’s hilarious attempts to bring it back with his own silly but successful efforts.
So if you really want to see a great comedy series, famous all over the world for its highly entertaining content and catchy signature tune, featuring one of the best comedians of the world, Peter Sellers, then just go for these movies at the earliest. And if possible start from the first and then continue with others to give you a complete experience.
