True Romance (1993) (Movies To See Before You Die - Thriller)

25 Dec, 2012 | Movies To See Before You Die / Thrillers

Beginning with an honest confession, I opted for this intense crime- thriller without any recommendation from a friend by only reading the name of Quentin Tarantino in its credits. But the film came out to be a pleasant surprise and totally blew me off with its fabulous, hard-hitting content and performances. Plus it simply made me wonder that why the film was not given its due credit by the viewers as well as the critics in all the reputed websites and must watch lists?

TRUE ROMANCE starts off with few tender loving moments between the hero Clarence and a hooker Alabama whom he later decides to marry. But post their impactful romantic scenes the film shifts on to a completely different track which doesn’t allow you to leave your seat at all in the next 100 minutes, quite similar to an enjoyable, exciting roller coaster ride with many unexpected moves. As far as the storyline is concerned it’s not anything exceptionally fresh revolving around a stolen cocaine consignment and their owners tracking it down. Yet it has many original moments of its own along with some shocking, unpredictable twists which keep you hooked on to the screen like a magnet.

Actually the film works at various levels and comes out a clear winner as it ends with an impressive conclusion. For all Tarantino fans, it is not only written by the maestro himself but has also got the glimpse of his distinctive entertaining style in the splendid direction by Tony Scott. In fact Tony conceives it perfectly as a typical Tarantino film with all those extensively violent scenes served with small dosages of dark humor, sex and rough language. The script is executed in an amusing manner with the famous QT trademark long sequences, featuring many smartly written dialogues and blood splashed on the screen in the most cruel manner not suitable for the faint hearted.

The worth praising direction is brilliantly supported by many wonderful performances by the entire cast, a solid background score and an effective cinematography which adds a lot in the overall impact of this ‘Wicked Bloody Thriller’ on the viewers. So if the above description of this gripping film interests you then do watch this entertaining mature thriller as a must and have a great rough time which might remind you of QT’s famous masterpiece PULP FICTION.
