Yet another film based on a novel of Chetan Bhagat, if this really is a faithful adaptation of the published content, then no doubt mediocrity is in the air and selling too, creating new questionable standards both for the market and our society in the new millennium.
The reason for the above statement lies in the fact that the weirdly titled HALF GIRLFRIEND offers nothing new or fresh except the Bihari language dialogues in its first 45 minutes, before moving on to the same old boring and beaten to death twist taking the viewers as granted. Moreover the way its director Mohit Suri presents the final 45 minutes bringing in Bill Gates too with the help of all poor graphics, one simply forgets about the initial fun element and just wishes to move out of the theater at the earliest.
In other words, it’s exactly like a good looking aircraft crashing within 45 minutes of its decent take off from the airport resulting in a complete disaster. The director takes you on to a musical Delhi-Darshan in the first half beginning from St. Stephens College to Humayun Tomb, Delhi Haat and more introducing the first floor of India Gate too coming as a pleasant surprise. But after these initial average moments, nothing works and the film completely falls flat ending on an utterly foolish note mocking at the viewer’s intelligence.
The fun element simply vanishes post the first hour. The romance or emotional connect is nowhere to be found in a supposedly romantic movie. And there is no enjoyable chemistry between the lead pair of Arjun and Shraddha, acting in an over-confident mode right from their first scene itself, assuming it to be an already hit project cleverly conceived by its makers. Plus deserving a strong mention, the typical and silly portrayal of parents remains the most bizarre part of the film pointing towards the vision of its writer and director together as the ‘creative team’.
Despite having 6 composers, 12 lyricists and 11 singers contributing in its 7 song ‘original soundtrack’, only ‘Baarish’ and (an inspired) “Main Phir Bhi Tumko Chahunga” somehow manage to rise above the average, with “Thodi Der Aur Thehar Ja” once again borrowed from a Pakistan Punjabi Song composed and sung by the same artist. Having said that, the director goes on using “Main Phir Bhi Tumko Chahunga” so many times in the backdrop of its lengthy second half that it becomes annoying after a while losing its entire merit.
Post some enjoyable lines in the first half, the dialogues suddenly become over the top and unrealistic in its ridiculous second half and the cinematography fails to help in any way along with an uneven background score. As a result one strongly misses the promised romance or love, once the film gets out of the college moving into the real life.
In all, HALF GIRLFRIEND is yet another casual romantic film cleverly designed to work in its first weekend alone fetching the required returns. And who cares about the rest when you can easily get some profits from just a 3-day run at the multiplexes becoming a new business model.
