KARISHMA KAPOOR and her unmatchable energy, timing & expressions in peppy dance numbers. (In reference to JUDWAA 2 by Bobby Sing)

JUDWAA 2 is going to be in theaters this Friday and as per director David Dhawan, it’s actually a re-presentation of his 1997 film JUDWAA and not exactly a sequel. Featuring Varun Dhawan (in a double role), Taapsee Pannu and Jacqueline Fernandez, it reportedly also has a cameo played by Salman Khan, the original hero of JUDWAA and they have retained two best songs from its soundtrack, “Oonchi Hai Building” and “Chalti Hai Kya Nau Se Baarah” in the remake too.

The trailer has been received well (though Varun remains quite close to the thin line of over-acting), but the released videos of its two (reused) songs strongly remind me of Karishma Kapoor, the girl who displayed an unmatchable spirited energy, timing and expressions in all her peppy dance numbers back in the 90s. Her hits along Govinda remain the brightest films of her career such as RAJA BABU, COOLIE NO.1, SAAJAN CHALE SASURAL, HERO NO.1 and HASEENA MAAN JAYEGI (all directed by David Dhawan). And the two major triumphs remain the most successful film of its time RAJA HINDUSTANI, and the one she received her National Award for, DIL TO PAGAL HAI - that had a lot to do with her dancing skills in particular giving a tough competition to the professionally trained Madhuri Dixit.

If you watch the two hit songs quoted above from the original JUDWAA then you would agree that Karishma displays such spirited energy in these songs along with her effortless facial expressions that find no match in any of the presently active girls in the industry. Particularly the ones in the remake (Taapsee and Jacqueline) actually look like putting much more forced effort in their steps and fake expressions besides doing an unnecessary body-show looking for some instant eye-balls.

Unfortunately this also reminds me that gone are the days when our Hindi films often had a big repeat value because of the highly entertaining and spellbinding dance numbers by the leading ladies (in the 80-90s) such as Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Karishma Kapoor and even Urmila (in RANGEELA) and Aishwarya (in TAAL) giving probably the last two memorable dance acts of the 90s.

In fact just try to recall when you last witnessed people dancing in the theater not on any entry song of a big hero but on a mesmerizing dance performance of a heroine winning over the viewers with her well-choreographed steps and adorable facial expressions.

Probably only directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali still realize and believe in the power of such impressive dance numbers, and rest have simply forgotten about this major highlight of our Hindi cinema, with Karishma Kapoor arguably being the last talented girl who used to have such a good time dancing on the screen along her male leads.

Cheers!
