Films like PATEL KI PUNJABI SHAADI reveal the extreme contradictions existing in Hindi film industry, where at one end we have young talented writers/directors in constant search of finance or producers for their exciting subjects, and on the other we get to see hopeless films being made just because the makers have a name and an influential reach to rope in a few veteran actors.
Needless to say that here we yet again have a film that features or rather criminally wastes two extremely talented actors Paresh Rawal and Rishi Kapoor in their most awful roles till date ruining the given resources. In fact it’s like a project that seems to have been worked upon after getting adequate finance to just deliver a film with two known faces based on anything whatsoever in a given time frame.
So with the money in hand, probably the very first thought the makers had was of Paresh Rawal as a Gujarati and Rishi Kapoor as a Punjabi standing in front of each other as two family heads. And that’s how they made it in the given time period calling all instantly available supporting actors for a few weeks or more.
The film never impresses you even for a minute as it right away begins displaying its loud, unwitty and crude (offensive) humour in the very first scene and you know that its sure going to be 2 difficult hours ahead watching many ridiculous sequences. Neither the dialogues deliver any entertainment nor the performances have any charm along with the music just being there as an essential filler. And it really gets on your nerves when it begins offering highly absurd and tasteless insertions such as a Gujarati KBC run by Darshan Zariwala, all clichéd references of Gujarati dishes and lifestyles, Punjabis foolishly presented as people who only know drinking, dancing and eating meat, forced political reference of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padao’ and a highly weird song-rap sequence on general knowledge talking about Gujarat.
Where both Paresh and Rishi seem to have done this purely for the money offered, Vir Das once again makes us aware of his bad choice of projects (and he himself is supposed to be a known stand-up comedian understanding humour well). The rest of the family members are mostly presented as cartoon characters behaving abnormally (including Prem Chopra) and only the lead girl (Payal Ghosh) makes some kind of impact in a few specific sequences.
Overall, PATEL KI PUNJABI SHAADI is one of those absurdly made movies which you will not like to waste time on even if they get aired just a couple of weeks after their theatrical release on a TV channel.

It’s a known fact that the investors or producers are always more interested in playing their gamble on known faces of the industry instead of the inexperienced new talent waiting for their turn or chance to showcase their fresh, unexplored vision.
And it’s really a shame when all those reputed names deliver a film like PATEL KI PUNJABI SHAADI that is nothing more than a hurriedly and poorly made project without anything concrete on paper as a good storyline or script. In other words, it certainly seems to be yet another film that got only made because its finance was readily available and the makers could easily rope in a few veteran actors playing the lead using their influence and reputation.
However the more dangerous outcome of such films is that they severely demoralize and hamper the fighting spirit of all budding writers and directors having much better subjects and ideas already submitted with the same production houses making such pathetic films.
