Amar Prem (1971) - (Movies To See Before You Die - Love Theme)

Amar Prem - Bobby Talks Cinema.com

One of best films in the careers of three major stars Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore & R. D. Burman. Each contributes equally to this well directed film which makes you think again about our phony society and its false values. The movie unveils the true faces behind every human full of desire and lust.

All the songs and their lyrics deserve a special mention as they are true gems to be cherished forever. For a change this can be stated as one of those few movies in which Rajesh Khanna doesn’t go overboard and gives a very subtle performance. Among the best scenes of the movie is when after hearing Sharmila singing, Rajesh Khanna follows it to her house and the moment she stops singing, he says, “Tumne to is kamre ko mandir bana diya”. That’s what I call sheer poetry on the celluloid, simply not to be missed.

Recently i was randomly watching this movie on Television after many years. The last scene where Rajesh Khanna asked Sharmila tagore not to cry but found he himself got tears in his eyes for me is the most favorite scene of the movie.

Also, regarding the music department, RD burman has composed so many fabulous albums but this movie will definately come under his top 3 albums in my opinion.

Lately after watching the movie and while doing further search i found one interesting trivia about this movie :

When Shakti Samanta narrated the story of Amar Prem to Rajesh khanna and also told him that it's actually a female centric movie but Rajesh khanna got so attracted with the story and wanted to do Anand babu's role.He didn't have available dates till next one year but Shakti samanta couldn't wait for that long so they finally decided Rajesh khanna will join the shooting daily post 6 pm after getting free from other assignments and that's how the movie got completed in 6 months and undoubtedly this has been the finest performance of kaka in terms of emotions(As in Anand somewhere the fun was attached even in emotional scenes may be Hrishida's impact )

PS - That is why most of Rajesh khanna songs and acts in this movie happened during night if one has noticed.
