Hustle & Flow (2005) (Movies To See Before You Die - Drama/Musical)

20 Apr, 2010 | Movies To See Before You Die / Drama

Generally speaking, a Musical is a particular genre of cinema in which a story is mainly expressed in the form of frequent song sequences coming on the screen, specifically written and conceived with a motive of taking the story ahead. But very rarely comes a movie which though is based on a musical theme but still goes miles ahead of just being a song and dance extravaganza.

“Hustle & Flow” is such a movie, which not only blows you out with its strong performances and brilliant songs but also enlightens the viewer about the way a song is conceived, arranged, sung and then mixed to reach its final shape. There are not many movies in the world of cinema which give you a first-hand experience of how one Hit Song is made right from the initial stages when its lyrics are written on a small pad lying in the pocket of its writer. Interestingly “Hustle & Flow” is based on a screenplay which has an important sequence showcasing the entire session of producing a song in the recording studio and the movie is simply worth watching for these few minutes of music making alone.
Along with this above mentioned rare merit, “Hustle & Flow” also makes you witness the pain and hardships suffered by the people involved in the flesh trade. Based on a story of a pimp and his female associates, the movie revolves around his journey from the roads to a Rap-Star. Terrance Howard delivers a power packed, career best performance as DJAY who re-invents himself in the form a creative person and for that he rightly won the prestigious OSCAR nomination for The Best Performance in a Leading Role.
The movie has been directed by Craig Brewer, who’s unique and sensitive treatment of the subject proves to be the backbone of this must watch musical masterpiece. The splendid tracks in the movie also indicate towards the terrific musical sense possessed by its director. And that was the reason why “Hustle & Flow” also Won an OSCAR for The Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures in the year 2006. The awarded song “It’s Hard Out There For A Pimp” has got the right punch and it keeps growing on you even days after you have watched it in the movie.
So, if you are an avid fan of Hip Hop music and really want to feel the right groove then “Hustle & Flow” should be the next move you make in your musical journey. But please note that the movie holds the Restricted Rating (R) and strictly calls for an adult viewing since it has got a lot of abusive and offensive stuff going on along with its pumping music. Nevertheless, it’s a must watch for everyone who is musical from his heart and soul.
Directed by Craig Brewer
Starring : Terrance Howard, Anthony Anderson, Taryn Manning, Tarji P. Henson and more.
