A film like LANKA can easily be compared with an important catch in a Cricket match where the ball just pops out of the hands of the player attempting it. The phrase is used here to describe the film because it has everything in it, needed for a good film but still the makers are unable to utilize its each potential merit in the right way.

Titled LANKA the film does take its inspiration from ‘Ramayana’ to some extent but then every Indian film has something or the other close to the Epic’s divine story as its full of very emotional and heart-warming content. However in the present version the emphasis is on RAVAN – VIBHISHAN relationship with a different added angle of their love interest. The story revolves around two brothers and a girl with whom the elder brother is having an open relationship in which he keeps exploiting her physically as a Keep. The younger brother being a silent observer of this relationship is not able to bear the injustice and slowly develops a liking towards the girl owned by his influential brother leading to his revolt.
Now the basic plot and other elements thrown in by the writers in the film have everything ranging from love, hatred, exploitation, injustice, sex, revolt, confrontation and even police nexus with the influential. In addition there is also a plot of regional caste differences and village rivalry roped in for the smaller centers. But despite of having so much on paper to exploit on screen, the film fails to deliver and comes out to be just a decent first attempt by its director Maqbool Khan.
Though there are some well directed and acted sequences in the film which count, but sadly they come after long gaps which reduces their impact on the audience. The script moves at a very slow pace, becoming uninteresting after a while leading to boredom. The specially inserted Item song and another slow number do not provide any help too and remain ineffective. The writers leave so many questions not explained properly in the narration, like why the girl’s family is surrendering so easily and regularly to the ugly and unethical demands of the big brother or Why the hero doesn’t take any action throughout the movie to save his love? May be he was asked to save it for the climax, which again is nothing impressive from any angle.
Yet there is something to cheer in LANKA and that’s the superlative performance of Manoj Bajpai who once again proves that he can always leave a mark even if the script of his film is a big letdown. The Cinematography also serves as the second positive point in the film after Manoj. Arjan as the younger brother tries to talk through his eyes successfully but I still felt he could have been much better. Tia doesn’t disappoint with a pleasing presence on the screen. Yashpal Sharma is excellent as usual but if only the script had given them all something exceptional to perform, then LANKA could have been a worth watching venture.
As for now it can only be watched if you are a true fan of Manoj Bajpai, as the actor remains the single asset of the film unarguably.

To be honest, this film is not going to earn much and also may not impress a major proportion of audience who love watching the usual masala movies. Despite of the fact it still remains a simple, sweet, truthful movie which mainly becomes watchable due to its worth praising performances and some fabulous well written sequences post intermission.

Talking about a small town man, Vinay Pathak, trying to adjust in the fast city life of Mumbai, the story basically revolves around his sudden relationship with his new neighbor Neha Dhupia, who is a ‘bindaas girl’ working and trying to make a name in the glamour industry. In its first half the director Saurabh Shukla strictly follows the guidelines inspired from the simple yet effective works of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee. Hence the first hour of the film just has some light moments of the conflict between the two characters coming from different background which fairly keeps you entertained in bits and parts, with a pleasant surprising act from Neha.
But it’s the second half of the movie, which has some well-written, meaningful sequences making a noticeable impact on the viewer through its straight forward and bold execution. The first one comes in the form of the scene where the director, his actors and his writers very effectively explain the problem of ‘those few difficult days of the month’ coming in the life of every young girl, pretty clearly and boldly. In fact probably it’s the first time in Indian Cinema that any such sequence has been shot with very noble intentions, capable of spreading awareness among the youngsters too. And how it worked, was proved right in front of my eyes in the theater, through a group of few girls and boys who were just sitting behind my seat. Now as Vinay Pathak was explaining the pain of those few days on the screen in very clear words, the boys started laughing. Tolerating it for only few seconds, a girl couldn’t resist, she stood up and loudly questioned, “What’s so funny in this? Please tell me.” with anger on her face. And that very moment I realized that this is nothing but “Spreading Awareness through the medium of films”.
The second worth mentioning sequence is the one in which Neha’s father meets her after a long time but still doesn’t approve her way of earning money by being a dancer-actress wearing very revealing dresses. Now this very scene enlightens us that nothing has changed actually in all these decades. Yes, the media has hyped the profession hugely and there is lot of glamour & status too now associated with the Industry. But for girls, the profession was, the profession is and may be, will remain a dicey choice to accept for all the middle class families living in the small towns. And the fact is that this career option still is looked upon with many suspicious eyes and is not considered to be a decent one, even in the year 2011.
The third enjoyable merit of the film, is a five minutes cameo by Nasseruddin Shah playing Vinay’s father, who simply proves to be a veteran with only a few lines given to him as dialogues. And what he conveys in those few words is the ultimate truth of life changing its course both in the big cities as well as in the smaller towns.
Coming to the weak points of the film, it has got a few which if tackled properly, could have resulted in a bit more entertaining movie for sure. To start with, both the characters are living in a building of Sales Tax Officers, yet what kind of Vigilance Raids are happening there repeatedly is really confusing. Further, the subtle love story in the film never gets justified with its funny title “Pappu Can’t Dance Saala”. Evidently the name was kept to encash the over-popularity of the song with the same words from “Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na”. Apart from these, the narration of the film remains quite slow with many repetitive kind of scenes saying the same thing, which actually kills all the excitement build up by its electrifying start. And then its open end in the climax is also not able to leave a solid impact on the viewers coming out of the theater.
However, what makes PCDS a sweet one time watch is a surprising polished performance by Neha Dhupia, who enters the film with a plain-jane look without any kind of make-up quite boldly and then goes on to be a glamorous model later on. She performs equally well, playing both a Bad and Good girl as per the changes in her character throughout the movie and impresses a lot. In fact, I would like to say that after so many years in the Industry what actually makes a difference between Neha and the Big Names is only a four letter word called LUCK. Otherwise she is nothing short in talent from any of the famous leading ladies today. Famous as a Sex-Symbol due to some of her bold films, she is sure going to be taken in a more serious way by the Industry post PCDS.  Vinay Pathak is once again first rate as the honest small town guy, but he has done these kinds of roles so many times in the past that one really finds tough to praise it repeatedly. Rajat Kapoor is fine in his brief role and the rest of the supporting cast supports well too.
In all, due to its avoidable drawbacks including an average soundtrack, PAPPU CANT DANCE SAALA doesn’t come out to be an outstanding film. Yet it’s a simple and sweet one time watch, with a praise-worthy performance from Neha. So you can give it a try if you wish.

Gadar Train To Amritsar - Bobby Talks Cinema.com

This is about an emotional incident revealed in an interview by Anil Sharma, the director of GADAR A Prem Katha (a 2001 mega blockbuster of bollywood), when he was shooting the movie in an outdoor schedule at Amritsar Railway Station with a huge live crowd.
To give it an authentic feel, the Amritsar station was given the look of 1940s when the unfortunate incident actually happened. All the advertisements and posters displayed within the station were pulled down and replaced with ones from the 1940s. All modern equipments were interchanged with the dummy old ones and the scene was shot on the same platform of Amritsar station where such a train had come in 1947. The steam engine used for the shooting had been hired from the Railway Museum at Delhi and it was all done in a “Live’ station with the real crowd and actors.

In response to an advertisement given in the city, the locals turned up in lakhs for the shooting of the sequence in which the train was shown coming in from Pakistan. The advertisement stated that anyone who wears Kurta-Pyjama (a traditional Indian attire) will be in the frame. And due to that news, the stock of these garments in the market simply vanished and people were there in their full force dressed as required.
In the words of the director Anil, “As the scene got over, one old Sikh gentleman was banging his head on the platform chair and howling with no intentions of moving away”. When I told him, “Papaji, the shot is over!” he looked up slowly with tears in his eyes and said, ”It was more than 50 years ago when I was about 10 and I have myself witnessed this very same scene in real life. An actual train full of corpses had arrived and today it was as if everything was happening again in front of my old eyes”.
Such was the impact of the realistic scene shot on the witnesses there and the same euphoria was seen again as the film got released. However I seriously hope that the historical representation of this bygone era in the films, teaches us the mistakes done in the past and we all learn our new lessons of love and friendship from the same, at least for our coming generations in the future.

For viewers who are heavily into Western Cinema and have watched many classy Con movies made in the other parts of the world, this is nothing more than a sweet & soft try in that particular genre. May be that is that reason why I couldn’t find LADIES VS RICKY BAHL in any way above than an average entertainer. But on the other hand, even for all the die-hard Bollywood lovers too, LVRB offers quite less than what was being expected from the HIT team of BAND BAAJA BAARAT returning together after their last year’s winning march at almost all the Big Award Functions.

Based on a plot of revenge planned by 3 ladies who were conned by the same man in different cities, it is not a straight remake but still reminds you of films such as JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE (2006) (similar plot used in college romance), NAAN AVANILLAI (Tamil) (1974 & 2007) and Jeffrey Archer’s novel NOT A PENNY MORE, NOT A PENNY LESS revolving around a comparable outline.  
Starting off with the most interesting section of the film featuring a new girl Parineeti, LVRB impresses you a lot in its first 15 minutes. In fact as the other two con stories are told with the introduction of Anushka, it more or less makes a positive impact on the viewers entertaining them fairly. So till intermission it just gives you a feeling of another good movie from the team as expected. But post interval, the pace starts dropping, the con schemes are not believable and the unwanted romance spoils the game in the end leaving you largely unsatisfied.
To give you a clear picture, there are three factors which restrict LVRB to just be an average one time entertainer against all hopes. The first one refers to its hugely unwanted and average songs which keep hampering the proceedings regularly. The second one is its romantic angle which needs to be played very subtly in a Con movie. But here it takes over the limelight towards the end which should have been strictly avoided. Lastly it’s the completely predictable nature of its script which doesn’t give you any sharp twits or surprises as it progresses. So with all these key reasons LVRB just remains an average entertainer with not anything exceptional to offer to its audience.
Director Maneesh Sharma does show some sparks of his first film in few sequences but I really was expecting a lot more from him and his team in LVRB. Actually he misses the mark this time because he doesn’t stick to the genre in particular and goes on to add the usual romance and songs in his film which were not required at all. Maybe he was pressurized to do so but frankly these two things have only ruined his otherwise good film in reality. However Manish remains one of those few directors who are able to capture the Delhi-feel perfectly in their films, as visible in LVRB’s first con-story of a Punjabi daughter of a rich property dealer in Delhi.
Cinematography captures the essence of the movie superbly but Devika Bhagat’s screenplay misses the mark in its second half and doesn’t provide you the excitement which has to be there essentially in a Con-movie. Yet the dialogues by Habib Faisal do give you something to laugh and enjoy at regular intervals. Musically it has a weak soundtrack with only a few above average songs like “Aadat Se Majboor” and I really wonder why film-makers use a whole good song in the end credits when half of the public is walking out of the hall without noticing all the hard work put in the song’s audio & video by the entire creative team.
Surprisingly LVRB has a small gem in its performance department which comes from neither Ranveer and nor Anushka. Its from a new girl Parineeti who in fact gets the most claps and laughs in the theater with her brilliantly rendered one liners in a Punjabi-touch. Both Ranveer and Anushka are great in their given roles but they again have to display the same romantic feelings as shown in BBB towards the end. Anushka once again proves her timing and skill but somehow I didn’t feel the superb chemistry between them this time on the screen as seen in their first movie together. Though Ranveer looks great with his cunning smile as the conman but he still has to move over his famous Tapori image of BBB. In the supporting cast Dipannita Sharma is graceful and Aditi Sharma plays her part naturally.
On the whole LADIES VS RICKY BAHL gives you much less than expected with a great first half and a pretty weak second. But still you can watch it once for Ranveer’s looks, Anushka’s charm and Parineeti, who will straight away remind you of the entertaining Punjabi girl in BAND BAAJA BAARAT (Anushka) and OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE (Richa Chaddha).
